How to open face photographs or LiDAR Mesh Scans in Leapfrog?

Intro

Rock Mapper allows to generateĀ 3D photorealistic textured meshesĀ using the iPad Pro's built-in LiDAR sensor and camera array. They are stored as 3 separate files (OBJ + MTL + JPG, see details here) which can be directly used in Leapfrog Geo.Ā
Georeferenced face photographs are stored in the same way, but instead of having full 3D depth information like a LiDAR scan does, the photograph is simply represented as a flat 2D object in 3D space.Ā

ā„¹ļøĀ Rock Mapper generates a number of textured mesh files which are automatically included in the Rock Mapper ZIP file. See here for more information.

1. Import into Meshes folder

In Leapfrog, right click onto the Meshes folder and choose Import Mesh. Then select the OBJ file that you'd like to import. Make sure that all three files (OBJ + MTL + JPG) are in the same folderĀ so that the texture is mapped accordingly. The textured meshes are then added tothe Meshes folder, but are not shown in the 3D View yet.Ā

2. Visualise Textured Mesh in 3D View

Drag and drop the imported textured mesh into the 3D view. In case it only shows a triangulation with a solid colour (red inside, blue outside), then make sure to pick the associated texture in the properties section (see screenshot below). Leapfrog will remember this setting the next time you open / view the textured mesh.Ā
