Intro
Every Rock Mapper 'project' should start with a picture, which can either be imported or taken with the iPad. The picture can be annotated and georeferenced in Rock Mapper and can be used as a base map for mapping and sampling.
Workflow
š Start New Rock FaceĀ
šĀ Option 1. Take Picture
Tap on Take Picture. This will allow you to capture a rock face photograph with the iPad's built-in camera.

Please note that the face heading value (= orientation of rock face) is overlayed live onto the picture and automatically stored as soon as the picture is taken. Therefore you should stand in the centre of the drive looking perpendicular onto the rock face when taking the picture because the acquired heading value is subsequently used for georeferencing purposes downstream. Alternatively you can manually enter the face heading value in theĀ
Georeferencing ToolbarĀ later.Ā
ā¹ļøĀ The heading value is measured using the built-in magnetic compass on the iPad Pro. Please make sure to correctly set theĀ Magnetic DeclinationĀ in the settings.
āĀ We highly recommend to use a 1 second timer delay (tap icon below shutter button to cycle through 0s, 1s, 2s, 3s delay). This will help mitigate any motion blur that could be caused when pressing the shutter button.Ā

The picture is automatically previewed after it's captured for the user to review. If the quality is good then accept by pressing the green tick mark button and you'll be forwarded to the Mapping Page. If you want to retake the picture then press the red X button and you'll get back to the live camera view.Ā

ā¹ļøĀ Ā For best quality face photographs please follow the tips and tricks as outlined in this article.
šĀ Option 2.Ā Import Picture
Tap Import Picture which will allow you to import pictures that are already stored in the device's camera roll (aka PhotosĀ app).

There are 5Ā main options to transfer legacy rock face photographs into the camera roll.
1. Via Apple's iCloud
Visit
www.iCloud.com and log in with your AppleID. Open the Photos app in the browser. Pictures can then be uploaded and will automatically appear in the camera roll on the iPad (open Photos app). Make sure that iCloud is enabled on your iPad.
2. Via a Memory Stick
Save pictures on an external USB-C memory stick and directly plug it into the iPad pro. Then use the Files app to copy pictures into the camera roll.
3. Via Email
If you have configured an email account on the iPad (Mail app) then you can email any pictures to yourself and save them locally in the camera roll.
4. Via a File Sharing App
Use any file sharing service such as OneDrive, Dropbox or Google Drive. Download the file sharing app to your iPad. You'll then be able to download pictures from your cloud account and save them into the camera roll for use in Rock Mapper.
5. Via AirDrop
If you are transferring a picture onto the iPad from a Mac, iPad or iPhone, then you can use AirDrop. Find more details about this Apple technology
here.
