Prerequisite I: How to use an iPad

Before getting started, you should familiarize yourself with the iPad and its operating system knowns as iPadOS.

👉 Turn on/off, lock/unlock iPad

Turn the iPad on by long-pressing the top button AND volume up button until the Apple Logo appears on the screen.

To turn-off the iPad’s screen (and lock the device) press the top button a single time.

To unlock / wake the device, press the top button again.

To completely turn off and shut down the iPad, press and hold the top button and the volume up button for a few seconds until the Slide to power off… message appears on the screen.

You do not need to completely turn off / shut down the iPad. The power consumption when the screen is off is extremely low and will not drain the battery (Apple claims a standby battery life of 30 days).

Here are the most common touch gesture commands (for iPad Pro)

👉 Go to home screen

The iPad Pro does not have a physical home button, but a virtual one. To get to the home screen simply swipe up from the bottom edge (you'll see a white bar there).

👉 Open App Switcher (to see open apps & close apps)

Swipe up from the bottom edge, pause in the centre of the screen, then lift your finger. You will then see a thumbnail for each app that is running in the background. To fully close a specific app, simply swipe it up. To open/change to a running app, simply tap on it.

ℹ️ It is not necessary to close any app that runs in the background; it will not influence the overall system performance or battery life in a meaningful way.

👉 Search for apps / files on device

Swipe down from the centre of the screen to open the search field. Then enter the name of the app/file you are after.

👉 Open control center

Control centre includes shortcuts for several often-used functions (e.g., turn on/off Wi-Fi, enable flight mode, turn on/off LED torch). To get to control center, swipe down from the top-right corner of you screen.

Touch and hold any control to reveal more options.

👉 Take a screenshot

Simultaneously press and quickly release the top button and volume up button. You can also use the Apple Pencil to take a screenshot. Just swipe diagonally up from the lower left corner of the screen with the Pencil.
